Kids Say The Darndest Things
Turns out, I'm not the only blatherer addicted to quotes; both prophetic and profane. is found on the R-blogger page. inspiration.I think it safe to say that both are willing to cast a jaundiced eye at econometrics in the field. Early on in my professional existence, I concluded that the econometrician's fundamental problem is that their data, by and large, is acquired through begging and borrowing. While I have issues with psychometrics, at least some part of the field generates its own data. To paraphrase Bill Parcells, "If they say you have to make the meal, at least have the authority to buy the groceries."Neither has the chutzpah to put quotes as the introduction to the site, but someone has to blaze the new trial. - Full Post
Down the Rabbit Hole
Trifecta. Three's a crowd. Win, place, and show. Three strikes, and you're out. Could be worse; there's a fourth item I'm too lazy to delve into.So soon, you forget, eh? demonstrates that The Powers That Be still don't get it. All their quants doing all their voodoo (I happened to find my way, yet again, to ; so should you), and they all refuse to accept the obvious.Buried in the back page of the piece is The Truth:Under them, a borrower's overall monthly debt payments cannot exceed 43 percent of personal income. In his study, Professor Quercia of the University of North Carolina found that loans that complied with those rules defaulted at a relatively low rate during the housing bust. About 5.8 percent of them went bad, irrespective of how much the borrower put down. This is The Truth, since it's the converse of what's shown in : you can't have increasing home prices in a state of stagnant (or declining) median income without some serious fiddling going on.The argument that down payment makes a difference is a joke. What matters is debt load. The subprime ARMs, in fact all contractual ARMs, would still have exploded irregardless of down payments made. Push up the house vig after two or five or seven years, and the mortgage holder sinks. Unless his/her income has increased concurrently; but, of course, that hasn't been happening for years. Builders, and perhaps lenders, want house prices to always grow, since that's how they continue to make mo money. Arguments to the contrary, and there's a plenty of them discussed in the piece, pushing the envelope on affordability never ends well. The creation of the various ARMs was not at the behest of home buyers, but of those on the other end(s) of the process. Builders preferred to make 4,000 square foot McMansions. Banks preferred them as well, if only for the larger fees that higher prices brought. In order to accomplish this, however, a way to move folks into mortgages they couldn't have afforded under The Olde Rules necessitated making some new rules. And so it was.Fiddling with down payment levels won't make much difference, and then not necessarily positive for the economy. The evil part is the ARM. ARM is fine and dandy during periods of macro-inflation; wages lead/lag prices, but move closely enough in concert that the "real" cost of the mortgage stays more or less level. In these (semi-)deflationary times, contractual ARMs (where the rate ratchets at aging points irregardless) will fail. (If there're any who still think such never actually existed, .) The only serious avenue is to outlaw contractual ARMs. Prime adjusted ARMs are nearly as bad, when the economy is as out of whack as it is today. That Giant Pool of Money is still out there, looking for a "risk free" sinecure paying 10%. It ain't gonna happen, but they'll keep trying. - Full Post
Home Sweet Home [update]
Alabama. Well, not so much. Mayhaps some who should have been paying attention before are paying a bit more attention this time. I'd begun to wonder. Today's brings this quote:"Some of the increases can be explained by the fact that it is recovering from an over-corrected situation," said Lawrence Yun, chief economist for the Realtors. "But with people's income rising at only 1 or 2 percent and prices rising in double digits, it cannot continue."Now, what to do about it? The banksters and realtors are the ones who make the up-front moolah from such scams. Self-regulating? I doubt it."These are huge moves especially considering--when purchasing a house using a mortgage--most people buy based on 'monthly payment and the maximum allowable debt-to-income ratio.' This means first-timer share will fall even further. They are already at a multiyear low even with record-low rates," said [Mark Hanson, a California-based analyst].So what, gentle reader, has this endeavor been pounding the table about for all these years? If we have another Viagra in the Home blooming, can disaster be far behind? The issue is: who's doing the fiddling this time? Because there has to be a Nero out there. As the man said, they ain't enough moolah to go around.[update]Well, this goes one better."Home buyers have survived rising mortgage rates in the past, often by shifting from fixed rate to adjustable rate loans. In the housing boom, bust and recovery, banks' credit quality standards were more important than the level of mortgage rates.""The most recent Fed Senior Loan Officer Opinion Survey shows that some banks are easing credit restrictions. Given this, the recovery should continue," [David Blitzer of S&P Dow Jones] said in the report. Here we go again. The pumpers are at it again. Will the economy crash just in time for the Republicans' 2016 coup? The Supremes have just given them carte blanche to disinfranchise the Democratic base, and more than enough time to get that done. I wonder how the quants will include these Black Swans in their MCMC? - Full Post
What's The Word?
Famous or Infamous?"60 Minutes" re-ran a piece on one David Kelly, design guru to, and friend of, Steve Jobs (among many). In the course of the intro material, Charlie Rose voiced-over some of Kelly's brilliance: the Apple III and Lisa. Umm. Not what I'd put on my resume, had I the choice. Then, later in the piece, Rose and Kelly are discussing the one-button Apple mouse. Again, in voice-over, Rose praises Kelly for this one-button mouse innovation.Well, not so much. Just like most of Apple, the mouse was bought in, from Xerox/PARC/SRI. Moreover, that square chunk of plastic was far inferior to the vastly more ergonomic MicroSoft version (and the Logitech versions) which followed. The mouse, per se, was the invention of neither Apple nor Kelly, and the later ergonomic designs, which have yet to be bettered, came from others. - Full Post
The Future is Now
The various stock pumping boards (their self image is not so explicit) have been chewing on the STEC deal with Western Digital. The whole story of where SSD is going may end up being an essay here, but I'd offered up one comment, and I think it encapsulates most of the issues. Offered herewith:Fusion-io's problem: its IP, if any, is limited to the bridge twixt PCIe and the rest of the machine. Last I looked (which has been a while, I admit), they still hadn't managed to make a bootable part.STEC, on the other hand, has a tonne of IP in its controllers. The issue comes down to whether the future of SSD (NAND or otherwise) is in emulating HDD protocols, or simply exposing NAND to the processor. Sun, thence Oracle, led the charge some years ago with flash appliances. This, to date, has been a truly Enterprise part. But, it also appears to be the growing vector of Enterprise use of flash.Given all of that, STEC for Western Digital looks like a play at pro-sumer, SMB, etc. where a flash array would cost more than the entirety of the IT spend. Fusion-io may have a place there, but it's still too expensive. It may end up as No Man's Land of flash storage. - Full Post
Obamacare drives need for business analysts
Despite my making my resume on Dice inactive, I still get a lot of emails for “Business Analysts” these days, most of them in health care, probably because of the legal changes with Obamacare in 2014.Some them are ambivalent about specific requirements, but want some experience with statistical packages like SAS. But they all seem to require fluency with scripting languages like Perl and OOP’s live C++ and java. But it takes a lot of coding experience to become really fluent in these. I found myself that you had to develop and implement a project yourself, doing and debugging the coding and supporting it afterward, to be any good at it. And it was harder to get this kind of experience than it was in the mainframe world 30 years ago, because the pace was faster – and more youthful. The old 80s progression from coding to systems analysis and architecture does seem to be coming back.A lot of techies got some of these skills setting up their own servers in the 90s (even on 486 or 486 machines) before hosting was so widely available. - Full Post
No, it's not OK to be "expected" to tattoo your employer's brand on your bod (Rapid Realty)
A company in New York City, Rapid Realty (), is offering certain employees a 15% raise if they agree to have the company tattoo placed somewhere on their bodies. The Los Angeles Times has a story (by Ricardo Lopez), which broke this morning on NBC Today and CNN, . It’s obviously a sing of loyalty that is hard to remove. Krosteen Quam has a similar story on the Time newsfeed . But I would personally be offended by the idea of being expected to modify my body permanently for a job (as sensitive as I was about it as a boy). I found the idea shocking. Nevertheless, at least one condo in New York offers purchasers a free tattoo, . There’s something else here. Besides the objection to changing my body (oh, actors do that, but I hope temporarily), there’s the idea of using your own persona (not just your social media or blog, but your own personal appearance, embedded into your body) to transmit someone else’s message. - Full Post
Video transmission programming: does it belong on the web in javascript?
Ars Technica has an important by Peter Bright on the usefulness of javascript “codecs” for encoding and decoding (for playback)) video streams, especially in business conferencing applications. The technique fits in with Mozilla’s strategy as a browser, emphasizing keeping streaming back in web-based software rather than using phone operating system-specific apps. Another important concept is watermarking videos, which makes them easier to track later if they are pirated, even though it doesn’t directly implement DRM. Watermarks could conceivably be useful in child-protection filters, too, should “COPA-like” concerns surface again in the future. The specific script is called ORBX.js, developed by a company called OTOY. A preference for javascript as opposed to smarthone-specific apps could have an effect on the kinds of skills needed In the job market. Wikipedia has a useful discussion of “Codec” . - Full Post
Recruiters do look at your Twitter profile (if you let them)
The trend for employers and recruiters to look at social media seems to increase all the time – double lives are a thing of the past, even for the CIA. Tech Republic has an interesting piece by Tim Heard, “Your Twitter Account: A Recruiter’s Perspective”, . The recommendations sound like common sense. Be wary of (1) excessive posts, all day long, (2) snarky language, which may work within your own followers but doesn’t on the outside, (3) attacking groups. I wonder if demonstration of mental telepathy is a good thing. Of course, you can make your account private, viewable only to followers. And you can refuse followers. I suppose not many people would refuse recruiters. Mine is public ("@JBoushka”), but in the last couple of years I’ve notice that more people make personal accounts “private”. I wonder if recruiters pay attention to “who you follow”. Some people say it isn’t good to follow too many more people than you have followers. Not sure why that makes sense. - Full Post
Amazon to add 500 good IT jobs for web services, northern VA location; companies look at infrastructure resilience in choosing locations
Amazon.com plans to add about 500 IT professionals to a new facility for web services in Northern Virginia, not far from Dulles Airport and the “267” Technology corridor near Tysons Corner and Reston in Fairfax County. Thomas Heath has the scoop on p. A2p of the Washington Post today, link . Facebook and Google both have facilities in the Raleigh-Durham area, if I recall right, and Apple has a major facility near Charlotte. North Carolina (and to a large extent, Austin, Texas) have also become “silicon valleys”. One company, Verio, moved some operations from Florida to Loudoun County, VA (probably Ashburn) a few years ago because the infrastructure was safer from storms – an idea that some companies look at now. Why did I not get on this “bandwagon” after my 2001 “layoff”? There are a lot of reasons, that interacted the way storms do. For one thing, the dot-com bust had happened. Another big reason was that the kind of broadcast publishing that I was doing did not require a lot script programming skills. I thought I was revolutionary, but I began to grasp ‘revolution” when I saw what Shawn Fanning had done in 1999. Facebook wouldn’t appear for five years yet. - Full Post
So my Dice resume attracts invitations for distributorships
Why in the world do I get a “sales job” pitch on the Internet based on my Dice (inactive) resume? The last thing I would want to do is give up my “independence” to pitch someone else’s wares or agenda. Oh, welcome to the real world of families to support. As an “individual contributor” all those years in I.T, I didn’t have to worry about this? The link on the email didn’t work – a coding problem, but it seems to be “Rtui Cart Advertising”, site (no rating from NYWOT or McAfee). When you look at the site, it seems to be about retail distributorships – people “own their own businesses” doing this. After my layoff from ING at the end of 2001, while I was still in Minnesota, I heard a lot about this sort of thing. There was even an “entrepreneurs fair” at a hotel on 494 in Bloomington MN (near the Mall of America) for this kind of thing. Phone cards. Prepaid visa debit cards. Transportation cards (which can be vulnerable to fraud). Stuff poor people buy in convenience stores. (I don’t know whether there are distributorships for lottery tickets, but it wouldn’t surprise me.) Update: June 6Here we go. I get another email like this based on my "resume" from a retail food distributor. Why m,e? - Full Post
Federal judge rules Fox subsidiary violated FSLA with its unpaid interns in making "Black Swan"
A federal judge, William Pauley in New York, has ruled that Fox Searchlight Pictures violated US minimum wage laws by not paying interns. The Los Angeles Times has the basic story on its “Company Town” page by Daniel Miller, .The violations occurred during the making of “Black Swan” (directed by Darren Aronofsy, reviewed on the movies blog, Dec. 3, 2010). I was a little surprised that Fox would run a separate production support operation for Searchlight, just out of business efficiency concerns. Warner Brothers (long with New Line) has dropped having separate production staffs for its more independent films. The plaintiffs included Eric Glatt and Andrew Footman, who said they performed menial tasks that should have been paid for. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, there are some criteria that allow some interning. It must not displace a regular employee, and must provide a benefit for the intern (such as academic credit, or training). George Washington University had a symposium on unpaid internships in 2010, video here. One company I worked for in the early 1990s used “interns” from programming schools for tasks like librarian work and checking elevation packages. I think they were paid something, though. - Full Post
The Golden Rule: thou shalt answer calls from phone banks (if you've ever worked in one yourself)
I’ve set up my charitable giving to happen automatically through a bank. I’ve also become quite unsociable about accepting phone calls or house calls soliciting donations. Since I worked in 2002-2003 calling for the Minnesota Orchestra Guaranty Fund, and later worked for Arts Marketing, calling for the National Symphony in late 2003 after coming back to DC, I guess I’m not following the Golden Rule. People working in phone banks, often at minimum wage (in 2003 if was $6 and hour in MN and $6.50 in DC) need to earn their commissions, right?I also get calls from my “supported self-publishing” companies, either about an upcoming project, or trying to push sales of books that are over 10 years old. Although, the Kindle price has made the latter a little more reasonable. “Do not call” doesn’t seem to work at all. The problem is that there isn’t time to talk to ten callers a day, and argue them off. I wonder if some of the people I called when working for symphony orchestras got calls all the time from various places. And at Arts Marketing, we had a young man come down from Toronto to help the staff increase sales. He had been a music major. Musicians want to compose and perform in public, not make a living with hucksterism. In fact, I even got calls from a rock musician selling long term care insurance for a living. - Full Post
Windows 8 Action Center Maintenance can hang some laptops in some cases
Today, my Toshiba Satellite Windows 8 machine froze while Windows Maintenance was running/ I had left it idle a while, and had been turning it off at night, so it hadn’t run at 3 AM, so it decided to run today. The mouse or touchpad pointer left the blue circle spinning when the pointer was moved off the notification bar at the bottom. The Windows key would not toggle back to the Windows 8 “tablet” screen. I finally stopped it by hitting the power button. I restarted. It took much longer than usual to come back up, but it finally did. Through the control panel I got to the Action Center, and next to Security, found Maintenance. I found that maintenance had tried to run. About an hour later, I found maintenance had rerun, this time without incident. I looked at the Reliability History and found that the program “News” had crashed about the time of the hang (and sent a report). But it shouldn’t have locked the machine. I clicked on the little notification bar icon for details and could not get it to respond (without stopping and restarting). It’s interesting that Windows maintenance runs live, and can lock out the machine, in addition to the usual Windows 8 updates, most of which require machine restarts. Sometimes Microsoft Office runs its own update, and locks out Word and other Office applications for a while. I don’t like this. Earlier versions of Windows don’t seem to do this step. Microsoft has an forum answer on the Windows 8 freeze problem (). It mentions the possibility that some antivirus vendors could freeze the machine (mine is Webroot, and I will check with the company) and also recommends an “SFC scan”. A couple other little things I have noticed. Brothers laser printers warn on toner long before it runs out. The touchpad on a Toshiba satellite is very sensitive but can stop working if any grease (from food on fingertips) gets on it at all. Update:A little more investigation shows that the automatic Webroot daily security scan may have been running at the same time as Windows 8 Maintenance. I don't know if this is a "no-no". - Full Post
Improve your Domino Server Performance on the System i
On Windows it is pretty clear that Domino Servers only perform well, when the admin regulary defragment the file system where the Domino data is stored. Unfortunatly many System i admins do not know that fragmentation of Domino databases is a problem on their system too. So they do not get the best performance possible and with every year of using the server the problem of framgentation gets bigger and bigger. The defragmentation of the disks in a System i Server can be done with the command . So login into your System i with a 5250 Terminal client and execute the command: STRDSKRGZ ASP(*ALL) TIMLMT(*NOMAX)The ASP Parameter means that you want to reorganize all Auxilliary Storage Pools (Normally you have only one of this, but if you have more of them, then *all handles them all)The Timlmt(*NOMAX) means that the System i should defragment the ASP till all data is complete defragmented. As an alternative you can specify a exact time how long you want do defrag the disk. Disk reorganization stop automatically when the timelimit is reached. As the disk reorganization runs in the background and on a very small runtime priority, you do not have to stop your domino server or other system i tasks running. When you want to stop the reorganization before it is finished or the time limit has elapsed you can use the command.ENDDSKRGZ ASP(*ALL) When a disk reorganization is started a CPI1470 Message is logged in the System i log and when the reorganization finishes a CPI1472 message is logged. You can find the reason why the execution hast stopped in the message details of CPI1472.You can scan the System i log for this messages with the DSPLOG command.DSPLOG MSGID(CPI1470 CPI1472) So give your Domino server on the the system i a performance boost and execute the disk reorganization regulary. My suggestion is to add the command to the job scheduler of the System i. - Full Post
Tabris a cool way to reuse your Notes/Eclipse RCP skills in the mobile app development

With the Tabris SDK they first commercial native client to RAP Server for Android and IOS is available. So you can reuse your existing SWT/Jface skills and build native apps for Android and IOS right like you are building Plugins for Notes today. Demos of the Tabris functionality are availabe on the google playstore. I think this is really a very cool technology and every Eclipse RCP developer should try this out. - Full Post
Improve File enumeration performance in the admin client
Since Domino 8.5 there have been many files in the data/domino directory on the server. So every time you refresh the files tab you have to wait while the server scans the whole data/domino directory. Although some contents like domino/js is not scanned this can take some time. Fortunatly there is a notes.ini setting which disable file scans in the domino directory. To enable this feature you cann add ADMIN_CLIENT_SKIP_DOMINO=1 to the notes.ini of the server or you can set this value with SET CONFIGURATION ADMIN_CLIENT_SKIP_DOMINO=1 on the console.I have tried this on my development server. Without ADMIN_CLIENT_SKIP_DOMINO=1 the file enumeration runs 4 seconds and with this setting in the notes.ini of the server the enumeration has finished immediatly after pressing the F9 key. - Full Post
Howto make regular expressions caseinsensitive
Regular expression are very useful for string operations, but one annoying thing is that regular expressions are normally case sensitive. But with a simple option you can change this default behavior. You only have to add the "(?i)" clause to your regular expression. Here is an example: String test = "The lazy brown fox jumps over the quick Dog"; // The following command will not replace Dog, because the regex is not // case insensitive. System.out.println(test.replaceAll("dog", "cat")); // With (?i) added the regex will ignore case and Dog will be replaced // by cat. System.out.println(test.replaceAll("(?i)dog", "cat"));But be aware, that the "(?i)" clause does only work for ASCII strings. If you have international characters in your regular expressions you have to add the "u" flag to your regex. String test = "Äpfel und Birnen"; // The following command will not replace Äpfel, because the regex is // not unicode aware. System.out.println(test.replaceAll("(?i)äpfel", "Zitronen")); // With (?iu) added the regex is unicode aware and Äpfel will be // replaced by Zitronen. System.out.println(test.replaceAll("(?iu)äpfel", "Zitronen")); - Full Post
IBM System i Pre-Upgrade Verification Tool
On the next weekend i will upgrade our System i from V6R1 to V7R1 TR 6. One valuable tool for the upgrade preparation from IBM is the . This tool runs on your windows workstation and checks if your system i meets all requirements and prerequisites to install the new release. To run the tool simply download and decompress the tool to a folder. In this folder run the "run_pruv.bat". An wizard opens, which will guide you through the process of the verification. After the wizard finishes the tool presents an overview with errors or warnings which could break the installation of the new operating system. For every warning or error you will get a detailed description how to solve the problem. So in my opinion a really cool tool to make your upgrade easier. - Full Post

With the SQL command "ALTER TABLE" you are able to add columns to your DB2 Tables for a long time. But before V7R1 you can only add columns to the end of the row. In V7R1 you can use the "BEFORE column" clause to specify the exact position where your new column should be inserted. Here is an example:Table "customer"FieldTypeCustomer_NumberCHAR(10)Customer_Name1CHAR(30)Customer_addressCHAR(30)With "ALTER TABLE customer ADD COLUMN Customer_Name2 CHAR(30) BEFORE Customer_address" can you add a second name column to the right position. - Full Post

Quality Control
In a few of my posts I've mentioned the concept of quality control, and so in this post I'll flesh out that concept a little further. Let's say a company has a pretty sizeable website and they want to make 10 small updates to it, as well as completely re-do the entire design. To complete these tasks they have five developers. One of those developers works on the re-design for five months, and the other four developers complete the small updates as they come in. Now lets imagine that this website is being used day in and day out. This means that we don't want the website to stop working. Because we don't want the website to go down, we never work directly with the code that is displaying the site to clients. If we did, whenever we created an error pages would fail to load, and functions would fail to work. For that reason, quality control methods are used. Let's say we take one developer who is making one change to the website. Because that developer doesn't want to update the website itself, he or she makes a copy of the website. We will call the production website a "master" branch. So we have one core branch that exists in a production environment (what clients see). To make a change a developer "branches off" master and takes their own copy of the website. They then make the changes, test them, make sure their copy of the website is working properly, and then push their changes back into the master branch. But wait! There are three other developers working on the same site, with their own copies, on their own branches. What if some of their changes to the website don't exist in our developer's branch? This is what's called a "merge conflict". If developer A updates his branch, and pushes his changes back into master, and developer B has created a branch and needs to push his code into master, but will over-write developer A's code, github, a quality control system, will refuse the change until the merge conflict is resolved. This means that the developer who is trying to push into master will have to ensure that any code that would have been over-written exists in their branch. You're right, this isn't a bug. It's an effect of the particular style you're using. The style determines what timestamp format is used, so either edit your favorite style to fix it (after copying, modifying the bundle ID, and placing in app support, of course, otherwise it will be overwritten next time you update Colloquy) or find a style that does use 24-hour format.
Now, if you want Colloquy to tell the style what the time format should be, that's another matter. It's actually possible that it does this (although I don't know if it actually does - it probably doesn't). And then all the styles would have to be updated to pay attention to this.
If that's what you want, file an enhancement request for that, because I'm closing this ticket.
